Robert Masterton, exiled from Scotland for supporting the Earl of Bothwell, served as quartermaster in Colonel Brogh's regiment of Scots in Holland during their War of Independence and later, the Thirty Years War.

From 1620's till American Independence, 'transportation' was used in lieu of imprisonment or execution for many convicts, including Christian Masterton of Edinburgh, sent to the American colonies as a whore.

| 3 | 1630 | - 1 Jan 1630—31 Dec 1665: The Fife Witch Hunt
Between about 1630 and 1665, several hundred witches were tried and executed in Fife, and around 1,000 in Scotland. These were often old, unattached women, perhaps with a history of being "difficult" and with enough enemies to name and accuse. Bessie Masterton in Dunfermline was one. She was convicted by the use of a "witch-pricker", John Kincaid, and probably burnt at the stake in December 1649.

John Masterton, a Kirkcaldy mariner, was mate on the 'Elizabeth' of Burntisland which sank with the loss of 85 hogsheads of Scotland's archives and records.
